During 2006, 30.3% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Texas had committed a drug offense. Approximately 47% of the drug cases involved marijuana. According to a study of Texas drug courts, offenders who completed drug court programs had significantly lower arrest and incarceration rates than non-completers and comparison group offenders. As of April 2007, there were 45 drug courts in Texas that had been operating for more than 2 years, 18 drug courts which had recently been implemented and 10 that were being planned.

Approximately 460,000 (2.56%) Texas citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
