There are approximately 4.1 million people in British Columbia, Canada. Statistically, this means that there are tens of thousands of adults suffering from substance abuse issues and in need of effective drug rehab programs, and only a small percentage of them receive any help at all. With more than 250 different drug rehab programs to choose from, how do you know which ones work?

Of past-year drinkers, 6.2% report heavy drinking at least once a week, and 25.5% report this pattern of drinking at least once a month. About 3.6 percent of people from British Columbia could be classified as having an alcohol dependence. This is higher than the overall average for Canada of 2.6 percent. This breaks down to 5 percent of males and 2.2 percent of females.

Approximately 14% of Canadians reported using marijuana in the past year, with 47% of young adults 18-19 having done so. An additional 3.5% reported using an illicit drug other than cannabis. The rate of marijuana use in British Columbia is the highest in Canada.

Excluding cannabis, the illicit drug most commonly used during one’s lifetime is reported to be hallucinogens, used by 11.4% of respondents, followed closely by cocaine (10.6%), speed (6.4%) and ecstasy (4.1%). The lifetime use of drugs such as inhalants, heroin, steroids and drugs taken intravenously is about 1% or less of the population. About 1.1 percent of people from British Columbia are said to be dependent on illicit drugs, which is also higher than the Canadian average of 0.8 percent. This includes 1.3 percent of males and 0.9 percent of females.

In 2002, the abuse of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs cost Canadians an estimated $40 billion ($1,267 per capita).
