There are approximately 1.4 million people in the State of Idaho, leaving many tens of thousands of substance abusers looking for effective drug rehab help. There are about 70 drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment centers in Idaho serving clients for alcohol and/or drug abuse problems. During 2004, there were 6,497 admissions to drug and alcohol rehabs in Idaho.

Approximately 26% of the prisoners and 36% of those under community supervision in Idaho had drug offenses as their most serious type of crime. During 2005, approximately 24.1% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Idaho had committed drug offenses. More than 75% of the drug cases involved methamphetamine.

Approximately 146 kilograms of marijuana were seized by Federal agencies in Idaho during 2005. There were also more than 19,000 cultivated marijuana plants were eradicated in Idaho under the DEA's Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program. Law enforcement agencies in Idaho seized 3,720 marijuana plants and an additional 157.6 pounds of marijuana.

Idaho has experienced a dramatic decrease in methamphetamine labs as Mexican organizations turn to methamphetamine produced in Mexico. This shift from local production to methamphetamine produced in Mexico is partially attributed to the increased control of precursor chemicals within Idaho. National survey results indicate that 31,000 (2.75%) Idaho citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 19,000 (1.73%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

Idaho Drug Free Youth (IDFY) is a statewide program developed to help middle and high school students resist tobacco, drug and alcohol use. Joining students sign a pledge promising to be drug free and submit to random drug testing.
